Meet Donni Pollock, #ArtGlassFinest Spotlight August 2022

Oh August how you have snuck up on us! We hope all of you are enjoying these remaining summer days. That being said, we want to introduce you to a very special artist. Drum roll please…DONNI POLLOCK! Her beautiful creations are contemporary, unique, and vibrant. When the sun kisses her pieces they make the most amazing reflections. Check out this powerhouse of a woman by scrolling down!

1.Tell us a little bit about yourself: who you are, where you are from, how you got into glass.

My name is Donni Pollock and I’m a full time artist in Tempe, Arizona! When I was in high school, stained glass was offered as a fine art elective credit, but it was a hard class to get into. I waited an entire school year until I was able to get into the class, and when I finally did, the original teacher retired so my class was taught by a fellow student, and a substitute teacher that knew nothing of glass.

2. How long have you been working with glass in general?

I started in the spring of 2013, with a few breaks in between; About 7 years total. I started my instagram and first online shop in September of 2018 and haven’t looked back since.

3. What is the focus of your work, any inspiration behind it?

So many things, but i’ll try to keep it simple; I love everything about our planet, and I’m a total space nerd. Im also a sucker for pastel colors, along with video games and anime! Plus, being from Arizona, the only flowers I can keep alive are glass ones. However, the “pale blue dot” photo form the Voyager 1 and quote from Carl Sagan was my main inspiration for the name Blue Planet Glass!

Here's the quote:

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.” -Carl Sagan

4. How long have you used our products, and do you use them exclusively?

Oceanside Glass has always been one of my favorites, but I haven’t used it exclusively. When I was first learning stained glass I didn’t know the difference of any of the brands and I just picked out what I thought was pretty, giving no thought of quality or who made it.

5. Is there anything that makes our product stand out from the rest- a reason why you choose to use it? What do you look for in glass when you are sourcing it for your next project? (ie: color, texture, quality etc.)

Oceanside’s quality is unmatched, it’s the smoothest glass I can find and its the easiest to cut, in my opinion. I also appreciate that you listen to our requests if we ask for a discontinued glass to come back or have a question about your products.

When buying glass I mostly look at color and quality, but iridescent glass has a special place in my heart, and I have an unspoken rule to buy anything iridescent. Can’t wait to get my hands on some of that Mother of Pearl glass y’all recently made.

6. If you are teaching a class, what is it about? What will students learn? (If not a class, are you launching anything?)

I am not teaching any classes currently but maybe in the future! I will be launching some new products once I’m back to work in a few weeks!

7. Do you have any big projects in the works or coming up? Any works you are particularly proud of?

Ive been working on a few extra large projects behind the scenes and I’m so excited to share them once I get closer to completing them, they will be my largest projects to date.

8. Tell us one fun fact about you or your work.

Ive always been a creative person for as far back as I can remember. I would always receive art supplies for Christmas and birthdays. I have vivid memories of  painting those plastic faux stained glass sun catchers…who would have known that almost 20 years later I’m making the real deal.

Thank you so much Donni for giving us a little peak into who is behind Blue Planet Glass. You are definitely one of the trail blazers in the art world showing great creativity and skill. From high school to now having your own online store, you are illustrating that space is the limit ;)
